In the early nineties the Brisbane Veterinary Practitioners Association formed a plan to set up an emergency centre.

The original Animal Emergency Centre was set up in Bowen Hills by a group of 120 veterinarian shareholders. The practice was designed to be an extension of the regular practice consulting hours and all hospitalized patients being returned to the regular practice during the day.

In the year 2000 a new hospital was built on the Southside at Underwood. This hospital was built in conjunction with Veterinary Specialist Services - a referral practice of specialist veterinarians in the fields of medicine and surgery. The synergy of the two practices was strong and the added advantage was that animals too sick to move or which required the intervention of a specialist surgeon or physician could stay on site with 24 hour care.

The original shareholders sold the Emergency Practice to a private company in 2005. In private hands the hospital continues to have the same aims and goals - to provide the best care for our animal patients and provide a state of the art facility in which to care for them. In addition, in 2008, Animal Emergency Service extended its services to the Gold Coast, and have a brand new practice situated in Carrara.

Both practices continue to provide relief for veterinarians who can switch their phones off and refer or send patients who require round the clock care to our hospital knowing they will be looked after to the highest standard available.

Pet owners can also feel more comfortable taking their pets home after illness knowing that help is available around the clock should anything deteriorate.
